Our team of Disaster Relief volunteers brought their hands and hearts to Yancey County, North Carolina this June to help repair the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene this past September.
Volunteers stayed at High Pastures Christian Retreat Center, about an hour outside of Asheville.
LCR member and volunteer Erin Graul documented the recovery work throughout the trip.
Erin writes:
High Pastures is a retreat center and we are lucky enough to be staying in the Singing Waters dorm.
Each room has at least three bunk beds and an attached bathroom.
High Pastures itself wasn't spared from the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.
We are lucky enough to be looked after by Volunteer Coordinator Sharon White.
We are sharing this picturesque housing with seven members of Church of the Pilgrimage UCC in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Theresa Dayton, aka Mountain Woman, is the homeowner for team one. She knows a little about everything, or maybe a lot about everything, in her world.
She is a busy property manager and lover of sci-fi literature. She is strong and confident and has a special way of making the people around her feel seen and loved.
Theresa made a video of the flooding at her home.
Team Two's lovely homeowner is Jen.
Throughout her hardships in life she has maintained her sweet and hopeful nature. She says it took this flood for her to feel that she is being loved by the world.
In the time since the flood, Jen has been living in a camper on her property. Six months in she found out that the camper was being donated to her.
Jen can't wait to decorate her home and sleep in her queen bed. She is a TikTok queen and craft maven.
Jen shared her experiences on TikTok.
