LCR in Focus
Continuing this month, the Long Range Planning Committee will use Ramblings to provide an update on the progress being made to address the opportunity areas identified during the Focus Group discussions held earlier this year. “Communication” was identified as one of the six areas, and this month’s article will attempt to “communicate” progress. Being able to effectively communicate is both a good news and a bad news story. The good news is that there are so many ways to communicate – more than ever before. In addition to the “traditional” methods of communicating – Ramblings articles (like this one!), bulletin inserts, Temple Talks, posters, snail mail (aka: regular mail via the post office), word-of-mouth, telephone, and the narthex mailboxes – technology has brought us email (with multiple addresses – work and home), text messages, myspace, facebook, and blogs (I’ll be honest, I had to ask my son about some of these!). You would think that with all these methods of communicating, there would be little excuse in not being able to communicate something effectively. Herein lies the problem – and the bad news part of the story. The bad news is that there is not a single method that will work across the entire congregation. Everyone probably has a preferred way of receiving information about what’s happening at LCR. What works well for someone might not work for another. Some of us actively seek information and some of us have a more passive approach. Some of us fight technology and some of us embrace it. Imagine the difficulty Moses would have experienced in communicating the Ten Commandments if he had so many choices. Luckily, he only had two stone tablets! The Long Range Planning Committee recognizes the importance of effective communication and the challenges involved. As an outcome of the Focus Group discussions, we will be convening a small group of LCR members to discuss communication and to suggest potential solutions. We will try to involve a good cross-section of the congregation that will hopefully represent the broad spectrum of communication preferences. If you have an interest in participating, please contact Anne Hess who is leading the effort for the Long Range Planning Committee. We would enjoy hearing your thoughts and ideas! And, finally, speaking of communication, did you know… · Every member is welcome to attend the monthly Church Council meetings. · Minutes from all Church Council meetings are published for everyone to read and are available in the church office. · Both Pastor Zorn and Diane Schwiger-Alexander each write a monthly report and the reports are available in the church office. Job descriptions of our church staff are posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.
